Best 50

How it’s judged

Last updated 14 September 2026

The five eligibility gates

Before anything is scored, every nomination is checked against five questions with a yes or no answer. Clear all five and the property goes into the judging pool.

  1. It is a motel. Drive-up or courtyard access, ground or two storeys, built as a motel or in the motel idiom. Resorts, high-rises, pubs with rooms, caravan parks and single-house rentals are not eligible.
  2. It is independent. Not operating under a chain or franchise brand. Owner-operator groups of up to four properties qualify, subject to the one-entry-per-owner rule.
  3. It is open and bookable. Publicly bookable and trading by 1 November, and taking bookings for summer.
  4. Six rooms or more. A motel, not a guesthouse.
  5. Clean record. No unresolved health, licensing, safety or accessibility orders.

The six scoring dimensions

Everything that clears the gates is scored out of 100 across six weighted dimensions.

Dimension What it measures Weight
Character & design Motel soul kept or reinvented, not erased 25
The room Bed, bathroom, air conditioning, blackout, soundproofing, cleanliness 20
The welcome The operator, the front desk, the late arrival, the local tip 20
Sense of place The town, the trip it anchors, what is on the plate and in the glass 15
Value in bracket Scored against its own price band, never across bands 10
The X factor Judge’s discretion — the tie-breaker 10

Ties break on value, then welcome, then a panel vote.

Balance rules

Three published rules keep the list national and affordable without anyone putting a thumb on the scale.

Beyond those three rules, the order of 1 to 50 is pure score.

The conflict firewall

Retro Motels runs the legwork. The panel runs the list.

Published with the list each year: the member count, the full scoring instrument, the recusal log, the stay log, and a right of reply for any operator who asks how they were scored.

The People’s Choice

The public vote runs alongside the judging and takes its own award. It is reported separately and never moves the order of the 50. One vote per verified email.
