This privacy policy is a starting point. Have it reviewed before launch so it accurately reflects the systems you actually use.
Who we are
Retro Motels Pty Ltd (“we”, “us”) operates best50.retromotels.com and runs The Best 50 Motels in Australia campaign. We are bound by the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
What we collect
- Nominations. The property details you submit, your reason for nominating, your name if given, and your email address.
- Votes. Your email address, and the property you voted for. We store a one-way hash of your IP address to detect duplicate and automated voting; we do not store the address itself in a readable form.
- Waitlist and enquiries. The name, email address, business name and any message you send us.
- Usage data. Standard web analytics: pages viewed, referring site, approximate location, browser and device. Cookies are used for this and for remembering your vote on your own device.
Why we collect it
- To run the nomination and voting process, including verifying that each person votes once.
- To contact you about a nomination you made, or a prize you have won.
- To send you campaign updates, results and membership information where you have asked for them. Every email carries an unsubscribe link.
- To measure how the campaign is performing and improve it.
Who we share it with
We share personal information only with service providers who help us run the campaign — our website host, email delivery and analytics providers — and with the campaign media partner in aggregate, non-identifying form, unless you have separately consented to your details being shared. We do not sell personal information.
Some providers may store data outside Australia. We take reasonable steps to ensure any overseas recipient handles your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
How long we keep it
Nomination and vote records are retained for the campaign year and the following year so results can be audited, then deleted or de-identified. Marketing contacts are kept until you unsubscribe.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, loss and unauthorised access. No online system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email jeremy@retromotels.com and we will respond within 30 days.
Complaints
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, contact us first. If we cannot resolve it, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes
We may update this policy. The current version is always published on this page.
